Designing for the financial sector may seem restricted but you can actually have fun
Elegance attaches great importance to cultivating and nurturing talent.
Our working environment is relatively free. And we provide professional business training for employees, encouraging them to continue developing in their respective fields while maintaining an open mind towards absorbing influences.
Elegance conducts regular interviews with employees, so we better understand their talents and they better understand Elegance.
In this issue, we invited Eriko, an Art Director at Elegance, to share some thoughts and insights about her career.
What kind of work experience did you have before joining Elegance?
I worked in various financial printing companies and collaborated with creative teams in areas ranging from advertising and print to digital, social media, marketing and rebranding.
How do you get design inspiration at work?
I think design inspiration exists in daily life. Through contacting different people and things, whether chatting with friends, traveling on holidays, or watching movies, you can get unexpected inspirations beyond your imagination.
What questions do you ask or methods of communication do you use with clients before embarking on a new design task so that you better understand their design requirements?
Generally speaking, I take the initiative to understand the customer’s brand concept and its business scope, and potential future trends for their business.
Secondly, I pay attention to whether the client has an exclusive corporate identity logo as an extension of the brand's image, which can be a great help in applying the design concept. Finally, I will communicate the purpose of this design to the client, the different application scenarios, and the effect that I want to achieve. Clear and open communication help ensure that the design is going in the right direction.
In your opinion, what are the similarities and differences between design work in the financial field and other fields? What are the challenges of your current job?
Although design in the financial field is highly targeted and only occupies a small part of the industry, it can seem relatively restricted. In fact, the more you understand it, the more interesting it becomes. Our customers come from all walks of life, which actually raises the need for designers. We must understand the development trend for different industries and come up with interesting ideas that are relevant. Creative design has become a key strategy for many companies seeking to differentiate themselves from the competition.
Competition and the decline of the printing industry have always been challenges faced by practitioners. In fact, there’s still a huge demand for printing – from the regular circulars and announcements of listed companies to brand image promotions for corporations. Nevertheless, we are constantly adapting to the ongoing digital transformation within the market so we can better meet customer needs and enhance our competitiveness within the industry.
Does the Elegance platform give you enough room for design work?
The degree of freedom that Elegance offers is not limited to design. The relatively open working environment allows us a lot of room for growth. The boss and management are willing to listen to employees and accept our opinions. They often participate in discussions and provide their own ideas, motivating us all to progress together.
What other career would you like to pursue instead of being a designer?
As a devoted cat owner, I might like to try being a cat sitter.
